Goat Herd
Our first goats were purchased in the late 1980’s when we moved from the farms on which we were raised in the
San Francisco Bay Area to Cottonwood. They have been selectively bred since that time and at present are very
healthy, hearty, and long lived. They tend to be a larger goat that will produce on average of over a gallon per day
throughout her ten month lactation.

Our goats are born here on the farm and we do not purchase outside stock. New genetics are brought in through
the use of artificial insemination. Through the use of AI, our herd has evolved into the productive group working
with us today.
Animal health, management, and welfare are a top priority here and account for the exceptional quality of our milk,
and the scarcity of animal illness. An animal in need of veterinary care is rare, however goats receive treatment
under veterinary supervision when needed. In the rare event antibiotics are necessary, milk from the treated animal
is discarded for an extended period of time and then tested for residue before returning to the bulk tank.

This year our farm is applying for certification by the Humane Farm Animal Care Organization which certifies
humane treatment of farm animals with its Certified Humane Raised and Handled Label. HFAC is supported by
the ASPCA as well as the Humane Society of the United States, and entails on site inspections as well as farm
documentation of animal care, handling and rearing practices.
